Tidy Notes: A Handwritten Font for Real-World Branding Projects

Opening the Project: A Blank Brand Board and a Fresh Font

There’s something both exciting and intimidating about starting a new brand identity from scratch. The latest project on my desk was for a small, local café looking to refresh its visual presence—from the logo to the packaging to the social media templates. As I opened a new brand board in my design tool, I knew I wanted a font that felt warm, personal, and just a little nostalgic. That’s when I reached for Tidy Notes.

What Is Tidy Notes?

Tidy Notes is a handwritten font that walks the line between casual and elegant. It’s not overly stylized like some script fonts, but it still carries that personal, human touch. The letters feel like they were written with a fine-tip pen on notebook paper—clean, slightly slanted, and full of character. It belongs to the Script Amp category, but it’s not just for wedding invitations or vintage logos. It has a modern versatility that makes it useful across a range of design applications.

It comes with multiple weights, ligatures, and alternates, which is a big plus when you're trying to maintain visual consistency across different brand materials. It supports multilingual characters and is available in common font formats like OTF and TTF, making it easy to install and use across platforms. And yes, it includes a commercial license—always a must for client work.

Testing Tidy Notes in the Logo Design

The café’s name is short and memorable, so I wanted a logo that felt personal but professional. I started with a simple wordmark using Tidy Notes in a bold weight. At first glance, it looked like a scribble—but after adjusting the kerning and letter spacing, it transformed into something that felt both handcrafted and intentional.

I layered it with a clean sans serif for the tagline, creating a nice contrast between the organic script and the structured sans. This kind of font pairing is essential in brand design—it gives the identity visual balance and readability without losing personality.

On a mockup of the café’s storefront sign, the logo looked like it had been hand-painted by a local artist. That’s the magic of a well-executed handwritten font like Tidy Notes—it adds a sense of authenticity and warmth that a sterile sans serif just can’t match.

Using Tidy Notes Across Brand Materials

Once the logo was approved, I started applying Tidy Notes across other brand touchpoints. It worked beautifully on packaging labels—especially when printed in a soft brown ink on kraft paper. For the café’s takeaway cups and tea towels, I used the lighter weight of the font to keep the design from feeling too busy.

In digital design, the font held up well on the homepage hero section. Paired with a modern sans serif for body text, it created a visual hierarchy that guided the eye without overwhelming the layout. On social media graphics, it added a playful, approachable tone to quote posts and promotional images.

I also used it in editorial design for a small-run zine the café wanted to launch. The headers and pull quotes came alive with Tidy Notes, giving the publication a personal, curated feel.

When and How to Use Tidy Notes

One of the most important design decisions was knowing where to use Tidy Notes and where to pull back. It shines as a display font—perfect for headlines, logos, and short-form text. But I avoided using it for long paragraphs or body copy where legibility could become an issue.

It works best as a logo font, accent font, or supporting typeface in a larger brand system. When used consistently across materials, it helps reinforce brand recognition and adds a touch of personality that resonates with audiences on an emotional level.

Still, it’s crucial to test any premium font before locking it into a full brand system. I always create a few mockups—business cards, product labels, and digital banners—to see how the font performs in different contexts. With Tidy Notes, I was impressed by how it scaled across sizes and mediums without losing its charm.

Pairing Tidy Notes with Other Fonts

Font pairing is a subtle but powerful part of brand design. Since Tidy Notes has a strong personality, I kept the secondary fonts simple. A classic serif like Playfair Display added elegance to print materials, while a clean sans serif like Lato or Open Sans grounded the digital designs.

When designing packaging labels, I sometimes used a monospace font for ingredient lists or nutritional info to create a contrast between the casual script and the technical details. This helped maintain a cohesive yet functional design language.

Final Thoughts: A Font That Feels Like a Signature

By the time the brand rollout was complete, I realized that Tidy Notes had become more than just a font choice—it was a design decision that shaped the café’s entire personality. From the logo to the mugs to the social media posts, it gave the brand a consistent, human voice.

If you’re working on a brand identity, packaging design, or creative font system, Tidy Notes is worth testing. It’s a handwritten font that feels intentional, not gimmicky. And in a world where so much design feels digital and detached, that kind of warmth can make all the difference.
